Google has updated the line of Chromebook laptops with a new Chromebook that will only cost $249. This is the point where these computers start to look like a good deal. They run Chrome OS, which is a Linux distribution that is focused on only running the Chrome Web Browser. It makes it secure and keeps the system always up-to-date because you are expected to be working online all the time with this system. Lots of people have said this is a great system for their parents so they can get online to check email, Facebook, and get info on the Internet but not have to worry about the system getting messed up. But by having a limited system they have made a lot of changes to the OS to make it more like a traditional OS. Also with the new price drop this makes the system seem like a good deal now.
The main difference with this new Chromebook is the change from an Intel processor to an ARM process that would account for the main reason why the price is so low now, along with reduced RAM down to 2GB from the 4GB of older devices. You also get 100GB of Google Drive storage along with the built in 16GB SSD that most of the storage would be used by the OS giving a smaller than expected storage area on the computer, Google expects you to be storing everything in the Cloud so you could just login on any Chrome OS device and it seems like you were always there.
The full specs are listed below, but this is only an 11.6 inch screen, gets 6.5 hours of battery, and runs on a Samsung Exynos 5 Dual Processor. Also check out the full gallery of what things look like.
|Processor||ARM Samsung Exynos 5 Dual Processor|
|Screen||11.6 inch (1366×768)|
|Size and Weight||0.8 inch thick, 2.5 lbs|
|Storage||16 GB SSD with 100GB Google Drive for 2 years|
|Wireless||Dual band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0|
|Ports||1 USB 3.0, 1 USB 2.0, HDMI|
With the upcoming release of the Windows 8 and Windows RT Microsoft has been developing what they think is the ideal tablet experience for Windows RT. They call their tablet Surface and will be coming out in both a Windows RT version and Windows 8 Pro version. The announcement of the Surface with Windows RT came out today and will start at $499, shipping on October 26 2012. There are three different packages to order, the lowest priced one is just a 32GB Surface with no cover and the highest is 64GB with a Cover. You can also order extra covers in different colors or buy a cover with a built-in keyboard that comes in 5 different colors.
While I don’t see mass adoption of Windows 8 or Windows RT it looks to be an acquit tablet interface but lacks in apps and functionality that most users will expect from a tablet such as an iPad or Android device. As for running Windows 8 on a laptop or desktop is a complete failure on the part of Microsoft, and they have only shown how the start menu takes over the system and that is all they expect you to do with your computer is have the start menu up all the time. This tablet seems like a response to the iPad but done with out thinking through the entire experience along with the experience of how Windows 8 will work as a desktop interface.
While the Surface looks to be a decent tablet it will also come with Microsoft Office 2013 RT installed, while it will be a pre-release of Office Home and Student it should get updated to the full release when it comes out. They also include Internet Explorer 10, Xbox Music store and other Xbox branded games. Check out the specs and gallery below for more about the details of the device.
|Software||Windows RT and Office Home and Student 2013 RT|
|Storage||32 and 64 GB|
|CPU / Memory||NVIDIA T30 / 2 GB RAM|
|Display||10.6 inch 5-point multi-touch|
|Cameras||Both front and back 720p HD|
|Wireless||2×2 MIMO WIFI, Bluetooth 4.0|
|Ports||USB 2.0, mircoSDXC, HD Video Out|
|Sound||3.5mm headphone, 2 microphones, stereo speakers|
|Sensors||Ambient Light, Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Compass|
|Price||$499-699 + $119-129 for covers + HD Adaptor|
Apple updated there iPod line of devices this morning with a new iPod Touch 5th generation, iPod Nano 7th generation, and introduced a new headphone design that is supposed to be better for listing and fitting into your ears. They also put out some numbers like they normally do with these announcements. They have sold over 350 million iPods, 600 million earbuds shipped, and have 150 million players on their Game Center platform. There will also be an update to iTunes in October on both iOS and Desktops.
The 7th generation iPod Nano will have a larger 2.5 inch display that supports multi touch, and is 38% thinner than the Nano 6th generation. The front only has a single home button that is common on most iOS devices. There is also a built in FM tuner that supports a “DVR” functionality. This Nano also has Bluetooth built in for wireless headphones and devise. They claim 30 hours of audio playback on a charge and will come in 7 colors including aluminum, black, purple, green, blue, yellow, and red. It only comes in one size of 16GB, and has the new Lightning connector and EarPods for earphones.
Also the 5th generation iPod Touch was announced with the same 4 inch screen that the iPhone 5 will come out with and weights 88 grams. The A5 dual-core processer is powering the devices with a clammed 7x improvement in graphics performance from the 4th generation iPod Touch. There is a 5 MP 1080p rear camera that supports the new panoramic mode and has an LED Flash, and the front camera is 720p HD and can be used for video chat. One of the other big things they seemed excited about was a wrist strap that they call the iPod Touch Loop, that could be good for if you have a kid or clumsy person using this. For WIFI it has the same WIFI as the iPhone 5 with A/B/G/N on 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz with speeds up to 150 Mbps along with Bluetooth 4.0 with LE. It will ship with iOS 6 in a 16 and 32 GB model in 5 colors, aluminum, black, blue, yellow, and red.
Finally they made a big deal that they have updated there old crummy earbuds with new ones called EarPods. These were developed to fit in your ear better and not be uncomfortable even with lots of different shapes of ears. They also made it so the speaker inside points into your ear better too give a better sound. This was the only product that was announced today and is shipping today.

If Android is not your style the new Windows Phone 8 phones (wow that is repetitive) are coming out and Samsung has their new Samsung ATIV S is not a bad looking device. One thing about Windows Phone is that the makers have to have a preset of specifications that each phone should have, this is to help make better devices. The phone that Samsung released at IFA is said to look like a Galaxy S III but running Windows Phone 8. Below are some specs…
- Windows Phone 8
- 4.8″ HD Super AMOLED
- 1.5 GHz dual-core processer
- 8 MP rear / 1.9 MP front camera
- HSPA+ / GSM
- 16/32GB storage with 1GB RAM and microSD (SDXC) card slot
- Bluetooth 3.0, NFC, GPS
Some people really like there Windows Phone phones, I think it’s an interesting interface but I like others are already invested in other systems like Android or iOS. Also Windows Phone has lots of apps but may not have as many of the big ones that you will find on other systems.
